This annual dinner helps to kick off Sumner's 3rd and 4th of July Celebration. Roast beef dinner and homemade desserts are served. Proceeds go to the Commercial Club to help fund the Easter Egg Hunt, July 3rd & 4th Celebration, Soup & Santa and other Commercial Club sponsored events throughout the year. Adults $5 and children under 5 $3. Turtle Race immediately follows. This exciting event takes place outside of the Community Hall in the intersection of 5th Avenue and Main Street. Children can bring their own "pet" turtle or can "adopt" a turtle provided by the Commercial Club. Ribbons are given for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place and Overall Champion. Raffle Tickets and Boat Race entries are available for purchase during the event! |

Each year on July 3rd and July 4th the town of Sumner, Nebraska celebrates Independence Day with a two day celebration. Activities begin on the morning of the 3rd with a Dodge Ball Tournament and a Basketball Tournament in the SEM Gym. The 1st Round Co-Ed Sand Volleyball tournament will be held at the ball fields. The Sumner Saddle Club hosts an amateur open rodeo with contestants from all over Nebraska and surrounding areas. New to the celebration this year is a Street Dance and Beer Garden sponsored by the Sumner Commercial Club and Sumner Saddle Club featuring Mohanna with Red Shoes, $5 cover charge.
The parade will begin at 10:30 am on July 4th, the 2009 parade theme "If I Had a Million Dollars" is sure to please with prizes awarded in Commercial/Business, Antique Auto, Classic Auto, Horse & Rider, Juvenile Entries, Adults Entry, Saddle Club, Club/Civic, Church, Team & Wagon, Antique Tractor, Special/Unique, and Theme. With as many as 100 entry this is one of the largest parades in the state of Nebraska. The parade is traditionally followed by family activities including Foot Races and Money Pile at the football field, FBLA Luncheon at the Community Hall, Car Show and entertainment in the park. The Sumner Volunteer Fire Department provides a free-will donation BBQ supper in the park followed by Fireworks Display at dusk.

The Sumner Saddle Club will be hosting their 58th Annual Open Rodeo the two days of competition are planned at 7 pm on Friday, July 3rd, and Saturday, July 4th at 1:30 pm following the parade.
The 34 member Sumner Saddle Club originally started meeting on private property west of Sumner and later purchased its current location south of Hwy 40 in Sumner. As one of the last amateur rodeos in Nebraska, over 300 contestants from Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, South Dakota, Colorado and Wyoming are expected with as many as 65 rough stock riders. Contestants can compete in saddle bronc, bare back, bull riding, junior bull riding, calf tying, team roping, barrel racing, ladies break away roping, steer wrestling and wild horse races. Rough stock will be provided by Hughes and Williams Rodeo Productions, Riverdale, NE. To participate please contact Marcia Berg 308-752-3785 or 308-750-2112. Buy your favorite cowboy or cowgirl during Calcutta on Thursday, July 2nd at Tub's Pub.
Following the Friday rodeo a street dance and beer garden featuring Mohanna with Red Shoes will play on downtown main street, sponsored by Sumner Saddle Club and Sumner Commercial Club.
